Mr Goldsmith is the latest victim of vicious threats after a string of pro-EU MPs received violent anonymous messages for opposing the Government.

He posted an image of the card he received on Twitter, captioned: "Sweet Christmas message from a local Remain group... they’re definitely winning the arguments.

"Merry Christmas to you too."

The card had abusive messages apparently written by several different people.

One read: "I wish you a cancerous new year." Another said: "You're a nasty, racist man."

A third message called Mr Goldsmith "a total disgrace" while one Remoaner simply wrote: "F**k you!"

Some of the trolls expressed support for Sarah Olney, who beat the MP in a by-election last year but then lost the General Election to him by 45 votes.

Mr Goldsmith told The Sun he had not reported the trolls to police because he now receives threats like this so frequently.

He said: "This sort of thing has become the new norm in politics today and we receive messages like this all the time. I don’t want to waste police time, so I only report direct violent threats.

"In the first two general elections I fought, this sort of thing never happened but politics locally has changed in the past two years.

"Almost all our posters in the election were defaced, many with swastikas, and lots of our campaigners were made to feel deeply uncomfortable.

"The people who sent this and other messages are Lib Dem activists and that party needs to get to grips with a growing problem."

A Lib Dem spokesman said today: "We utterly condemn this kind of abusive language that has no place in British politics.

"If Zac Goldsmith has any proof that these messages came from Liberal Democrat activists, we would advise him to make a formal complaint to the party which will be dealt with accordingly.”

This week Tory backbencher Anna Soubry revealed she had been sent death threats after voting against Theresa May on Brexit in the House of Commons.

And Paul Masterton, another pro-EU Tory, received a Christmas card calling him a "traitor" and demanding that he leave the country.

Social media companies have been accused of helping to whip up a culture of hate against politicians by giving trolls a platform.
