Now white-haired, Hamza seems to be smiling in the picture taken at ADX Florence “supermax” prison in Colorado, US.

It accompanies a self-penned appeal by the whole-lifer against his 11 terror convictions in 2015.

In the rambling 128 pages, he moans about a skin condition on his stumps and the state of his cell — and begs to return to the UK.

Legal sources say he had no need to lodge an appeal because his lawyers had already done so.

They included the black and white image to try to win the American appeal hearing judges’ sympathy.

His case is being paid for out of US public funds.

It follows an eight-year fight by Hamza, who was based in Finsbury Park Mosque, North London, during his hate preaching days, against his extradition which cost British taxpayers almost £1million.

His lawyer Sam Schmidt said: “He has his own opinions and wanted to ensure everything that should be in the appeal was.”

ADX Florence did not respond to a request for a comment.

Ban on four groups

FOUR militant protest groups have been outlawed amid fears of links to terror — taking the number of banned organisations to 22.

Home Office Minister Brandon Lewis signed proscription orders against al-Ashtar Brigades, al-Mukhtar Brigade, Hasam and Liwaa al-Thawra.

It means he can seize their assets and prevent their supporters from entering the UK.

He said the four had “violent militant operations” in other countries or used social media to promote and glorify terrorism.
