Ex-wife of John Worboys says ‘dangerous’ black cab rapist would have murdered someone if he hadn’t been caught

Jean Clayton, 60, brands evil ex John Worboys 'one dangerous man' and says their abusive four-year marriage was the 'biggest mistake of my life'

THE ex-wife of black cab rapist John Worboys has blasted the decision to release him, saying: “He should never be let out. The next step would have been murder.”

Horrified Jean Clayton, 60, branded Worboys — who police suspect attacked up to 200 victims — “one dangerous man” and said he should be serving life.

Jean ended their abusive four-year marriage after he spied on her daughters and admitted assaulting a woman after trailing her home.

After the Parole Board announced he will walk free in weeks, Jean told The Sun: “Is he out? I feel utter disgust.

"If he hadn’t been caught and taken to court he would have murdered somebody.

"It’s very scary. He was the biggest mistake of my life. No one knows what I went through.”

Jean first met Worboys in a pub in Hackney, East London, in 1988.

They wed in 1991 and he became stepdad to her daughters Carrie-Ann, now 40, and Clare, 42, and son Stephen, 39.

She says Worboys was a sex addict who spied on the girls, then teens, as they undressed.

Jean, who has remarried and manages a bar in Bulgaria, said: “He was the worst husband a woman could ever ask for.

“I realised during our honeymoon that I had made a mistake.

“When I think about John I get so mad at myself for what I’ve put my children through.”

One night Jean said he came home with mud on his trousers and confessed to tailing a drunk woman and assaulting her when she fell asleep.

The marriage ended in 1995 — 14 years before he was jailed for a minimum of eight years for raping and assaulting 12 women.

Daughter Carrie-Ann backed her mum’s pleas that Worboys should rot in jail. She said: “I caught him spying and he tried to give me massages. He was creepy, conniving.

“He made our family’s life a misery. I can’t imagine what these women are feeling. Nine years and out isn’t justice. It’s awful.”

One of Worboys’ first victims, just 19 when drugged and molested in 2007, said last night: “This decision is an utter mockery of everything that’s happened to all of us.

“In 2009 I said it was pathetically lenient, and it is. It’s a joke.

“Just thinking about him coming out is making me feel ill.”

Ex-stripper and amateur porn star Worboys picked up victims in his black cab and boasted he was celebrating a big cash win before offering them champagne.

But the drinks were spiked with a date-rape drug.

Worboys had been arrested in July 2007 after his first-known victim reported him to police.

Yet cops failed to search his house where he kept a “rape kit” of miniature champagne bottles, gloves, condoms and a torch. The kit was found in a later raid.

The Metropolitan Police bailed Worboys and dropped the probe three months later.

He attacked at least 34 more women before he was finally arrested in February 2008.

Worboys served time in Belmarsh and Wakefield where he is understood to have taken part in sex offender treatment programmes.

They aim to help cons “recognise risk factors” and “generate strategies” to avoid acting on their urges.

His parole bid is likely to have been lodged early last year.

He is thought to have appeared in person at the formal hearing in November.

When freed he will be strictly monitored and report to probation officers each week.

Cops 'asked CPS advice'

SIR Keir Starmer was in charge of the CPS as 115 new victims told police Worboys had attacked them.

Worboys had been charged in February 2008 with a series of sex attacks. Seventy-five new victims came forward over the next year.

Trial began in January 2009, with Worboys convicted that April. During those four months a further 40 women approached police claiming he had also attacked them.

It is not clear if any of those cases were passed to the CPS, but the Met was under pressure after realising cops made a string of blunders that left Worboys free.

Sources last night said that made it “highly likely” officers would have sought advice “on every new case” from Starmer’s CPS team.

The Sun told in 2010 how a Met probe found at least 102 victims. Cops said they thought he carried out 200 rapes, sex assaults or bids to drug women.

Fay Maxted, of The Survivors Trust, said: “He has served his sentence and will be on a stringent licence.

"But for his victims there will be no parole, no let off for what he has done to them.

“When you are raped, or sexually assaulted in this way, there is no way to recover, especially when these attacks were so deliberate and calculated.”
