George Michael’s close relationship with Princess Diana is revealed in explosive new book

The pop megastar said they "clicked" and formed a special bond after meeting backstage at a World Aids Day concert in Wembley in 1989.

George became one of the Princess's closest confidantes, sharing intimate meetings and late-night phone calls in which they discussed her split from Prince Charles.

According to , the former Wham! heartthrob said in an interview: "She was like a lot of women who have been attracted to me in my life.

"They see something non-threatening. There were certain things that happened that made it very clear that she was very attracted to me.

"There was no question."

The Careless Whisper singer also hinted their relationship may have gone beyond a friendship, according to new book George Michael: Freedom, The Ultimate Tribute 1963-2016.

He said in one interview quoted in the book they had "clicked in way that was a little bit intangible, and it probably had more to do with our upbringing than anything else."

Asked if he ever considered sleeping with Diana, he reportedly said: "I knew it would have been a disastrous thing to do."

The book is published four months after George's childhood pal Andros Georgiou told The Sun on Sunday Diana seemed attracted to the pop superstar.

Andros, who met Diana with George several times, revealed: “She invited George to Kensington Palace for what she called ‘a chinwag’.

“He said she made a point of touching his arm and her hello and goodbye hugs lingered.

"George told me, ‘Nothing happened, but it could have. If I wasn’t gay, I would’.

“Instead they became very close friends. She often confided in him about how unhappy she was with Charles during their meetings.”

Andros was given a tape recording made by George when he phoned to wish Diana happy birthday in 1996, a year before she died in a Paris car crash.

In the conversation Di shared her agony over her "grim" marriage break-up and said the Royal Family was “not very loving”.

The giggling pals also swapped cheeky gossip and took they mickey out of of flamboyant pop idol Sir Elton John.

She is heard likening pal Sir Elton’s enormous shoe collection to that of footwear-mad former Philippines First Lady Imelda Marcos after it was featured on a TV show.

George was high after smoking a cannabis joint when his call was recorded by an answering machine at his home in Hampstead, North London.

Diana is heard telling George about her break-up, saying: “It’s been pretty grim, but we’re near the end of it.

“Not a very loving, compassionate family, this one I’m leaving.”

The tape of their chat had been kept in a safety deposit box since George — found dead at 53 on Christmas Day last year — gave it to Andros as his "retirement present".

Andros told The Sun on: “They had a very honest friendship. On his third visit to Kensington Palace, they drank a bottle of wine together and George was so drunk she offered him a room for the night.

“This was about two years before she and Charles officially separated.

“She told him their marriage had been an arranged one and that, as she’d been so young, she’d no real idea of what she was getting into.

“Although Camilla was never mentioned by name, she confided that Charles didn’t love her as he was ‘still in love with his ex’.

Diana loved being a mother and lit up when she spoke about William and Harry, but said she had never felt like a wife. She was obviously very unhappy and we both felt desperately sorry for her.

“She was such a special, lovely person and she should have got that love back.”
