PETA launches petition demanding Greggs start making VEGAN sausage rolls

The bakery chain currently offers vegan-friendly products including potato wedges and popcorn

AN animal rights charity has asked Greggs to go one step further with its selection of pastries.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) launched a petition for the bakery chain to offer a vegan sausage roll.

PETA said Greggs was missing from a growing range of supermarkets and chains including Pizza Express and Sainsbury's who offer meat-free and dairy-free foods.

In its campaign, the charity wrote: "Greggs says it’s 'committed to doing the right thing' by customers, yet shockingly, it doesn’t offer any vegan sandwiches or hot lunch options in its 1,700 UK stores."

PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr said: "More people than ever are clamouring for healthy vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries.

"PETA is calling on Greggs to heed this growing demand, add a vegan sausage roll to the menu, and watch the cruelty-free treats fly off the shelves."

The bakery chain offers a selection of vegan-friendly products which include potato wedges and popcorn.

Greggs said it was dedicated to increasing its range in the future.

A spokesperson for Greggs has said: "We understand that vegan and vegetarian diets are of growing importance to many people - whether that be for moral or health reasons, or indeed both.

"As a company that believes in putting customers at the heart of everything we do, we plan to introduce even more vegan and vegetarian options in the future."
