A MUM in Italy has been threatened with a £8,900 fine for sharing pictures of her 16-year-old son on social media – because he doesn’t want her to.
The teen told a court in Rome that he didn’t want to be splashed across her profiles during divorce proceedings between his parents.
reported he was so uncomfortable with the details of the divorce battle emerging online he asked the judge to be able to move to America to continue his studies and “make a new life”.
And the court in Rome ruled in his favour, so now his mother will be forced to cough up if she posts more pictures of him.
She will also be fined if she doesn’t remove old pics, videos and mentions of him online.
Under Italian copyright law, the person in the photographs owns the copyright – in this case the teen.
In France the conditions are far harsher.
The violation of a child’s privacy by their parents can involve a fine of 45,000 euros and imprisonment for up to a year.
In May 2018 an EU law, the General Data Protection Regulation, comes into effect that will limit the ways peoples’ personal information can be used.
The new regulations govern the ways an individual’s private data can be collected and applied.
In November a judge from the Italian city of Mantua established that parents cannot post photos of their underage children if the other parent does not agree to it.
