Mum’s horror as one-month-old baby is rushed to hospital after drinking ‘mouldy’ Cow & Gate milk

A MUM says her one-month-old baby was rushed to hospital after she was made ill by "mouldy" Cow & Gate milk.

The new mum, 21, had decided to feed Esme the ready-made first infant baby milk instead of powdered formula to save time in the run up to Christmas on December 18.

Kelly, of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, said: "I bought a one litre bottle of the ready-made milk. All you have to do is pour it into a bottle that has been sterilised.

"She was halfway through the bottle and I went to go to wind her. I noticed there was something in the teat of the bottle.

"It looked like mould and I knew the milk had been contaminated.

"I started panicking right away. She's only a month old so I called the 111 NHS helpline and they told me to keep a close eye on her."

The next day Esme began to projectile vomit and suffered diarrhoea.

She took the baby to a walk-in clinic, and doctors there transferred her to hospital.

Kelly and her partner John, 22, a computer programmer, spent a sleepless night worrying about their sick child.

She said: "It was the worst thing in the world. I'm a first time mum and I was going out of my mind with worry.

"The doctors told me I had to try to keep giving her water because she was vomiting if we gave her milk.

"Medics were checking her blood pressure and her oxygen levels. Every two hours a consultant came to observe her and check her temperature.

";At first the doctors thought she had a viral infection but after doing tests they said it was the milk that had made her so poorly."

Esme was discharged from hospital the next day and Kelly telephoned Cow & Gate to complain about the milk. She says she has yet to hear back from the company.

She said: "My Christmas was ruined because I was so worried about my daughter.

"I want to warn mums that they need to be careful. It's not the first time I've heard stories like this. We need to be careful about the milk we give our babies."

Cow & Gate Milk said: "We were sorry to hear about Ms Green’s experience because we always want our milks to reach parents in the best possible condition.

"Our milks are made and packed in a highly controlled and hygienic environment and each bottle is thoroughly checked before leaving our factory.

In February the company was contacted by dozens of furious parents complaining about mouldy yogurts and baby food, and bosses admitted they were "concerned" about the reports.

The previous October a mum said her five-month-old was hospitalised by a mouldy pot of Cow & Gate apple and mango pudding from Tesco.
