Woman ‘left in floods of tears’ after being banned from Wetherspoons in row over refund
Melanie Scott, 20, claims worker at Hull city centre branch was 'snooty' and 'awful' after she forgot her ID, but pub says she was abusive
A PUBGOER says she was left in floods of tears after being banned from a Wetherspoons following a row over a refund.
Melanie Scott, 26, visited a Hull city centre branch of the popular chain with workmates last Friday lunchtime.
She ordered food and alcoholic drinks for herself and a pal via the firm’s app.
It requires users to sign a declaration saying they are over 18. Staff are then required to ask for ID.
But, when her drinks were brought to her, accountant Melanie says she discovered she didn’t have her purse with her.
She then asked for a refund but claims she was denied one.
The 26-year-old said: "I went to find my purse in my bag but realised I left my purse at work. The girl was really snotty and awful when she said she couldn't serve me alcohol.
"Then she just walked away without saying she would get me a refund so I went and asked.
"The duty manager refused because I had ticked the declaration box on the app to say I was 18.”
She then left the premises and returned with her ID, but alleges her request for a refund was again turned down.
Melanie added: “She said she couldn't refund me because I'd left the premises so it was void but no one said that before I went.
"I said, 'what do I do?' and she said they didn't want me in the pub.
"I was crying in front of all my colleagues it was so embarrassing.”
A spokesman for Wetherspoons say Melanie was banned from The Admiral Of The Humber branch for shouting and swearing at staff.
But she denied the claims, saying: “I’m not the kind of person to swear and shout at someone. I'm not like that.
“I am absolutely devastated at what has happened.
“I am humiliated."
A spokesman for Wetherspoons said: "We can confirm that the customer in question ordered drinks via the app. When a member of staff delivered the order to the table, they asked for ID, according to company policy.

"The customer did not have any ID, so the manager explained that, unfortunately, due to the fact they had signed a declaration to say that they are old enough to purchase alcohol, we were unable to give a refund.
"The customer was angry, but said she would return to work to get her ID. However, the customer shouted and swore at the staff member as she left the pub.
"Staff were polite and tried to help resolve the issue, however, we take incidents of verbal abuse towards out staff very seriously and it was because of this action that the customer is no longer welcome back into the pub."
