SELFIE-ISH OWNERS

More black cats than ever are being dumped because they ‘don’t look good in owners’ selfies’

Black cats used to be hard to rehome because of their association with witchcraft, but society's new selfie obsession is the new reason so many moggies become homeless

BLACK cats are being abandoned as they don’t look good in owners’ selfies.

One rescue centre revealed all its 40 moggies are black.

They used to be hard to rehome because of their association with witchcraft.

But Christine Bayka, 67, founder of The Moggery in Bristol, says these days it is because they don’t look good in social media posts.

Christine said: “It’s worse now because black cats don’t show up in selfies.

“It’s an increasing problem. It’s definitely got harder because of selfies.”

Amy Buckle, of the Last Chance Animal Rescue Centre in New Romney, Kent, said: “We have difficulty rehoming black cats.

People do seem caught up in taking photos and putting them on Facebook and Instagram.

“They want a model animal they can put on social media.

"It does leave the black cats ignored.

“It seems people find them boring.”

The RSPCA confirmed: “More black and black and white cats come into care than any other colour.”

The charity’s Dr Jane Tyson added: “Fur colour makes no difference to how much love they have to give.”
