Driver’s fury after conmen clone his number plate – and he gets parking fines 130 MILES away
A FURIOUS van driver who had his number plate cloned by conmen is being bombarded with parking fines - from 130 MILES away.
The driver from Hull was first slapped with a £40 fine after a Citroen Berlingo with his registration violated parking restrictions in Birmingham.
Weeks later, he received another parking ticket from ParkingEye in Birmingham - despite never even travelling to the city.
On both occasions when he received the parking tickets, he was working near Hull more than 130 miles away from where the parking offences were committed.
The driver believes the offenders have the changed the last letter on his number plate from a ‘C’ to a ‘G’ after examining photographs issued in his parking fine notice.
He said: “It’s extremely frustrating.
“Every time I get a letter through the post I worry about whether it’s going to be another fine or something worse.
“I am just worrying all the time.
He added: “If they run someone over it could come back to me and thoughts like that are always at the back of my mind.
“I keep trying to get answers but I just keep going round in circles – I’m not getting anywhere.”
He claimed the police will not investigate the cloning of his number plates.
He has since lodged the matter with Action Fraud and it is currently been assessed by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau.
He said: “I don’t know what to do, hopefully they can change my registration number but it should never have come to that.
“I’m looking at another two to three months for that to process and in that time I could still get another fine.
“It’s so time consuming sending letters and spending money on stamps and delivery costs.
“It’s just turning into a bit of a nightmare and with this hanging over me all the time it’s getting my really upset.
“I feel really unlucky – something always has to happen to me.”
The fines have now finally been cancelled by ParkingEye, but the firm admitted it cannot put a mark on the car to identify it as stolen to prevent the driver receiving future fines.
A DVLA spokesperson said: “If there is evidence that two vehicles are showing the same registration number we can, where appropriate, provide an alternative age related registration number but the keeper would be responsible for purchasing replacement number plates showing the new registration number.”
