Who is gunman Nikolas Cruz?

Nikolas Cruz, 19, had been expelled from high school for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

On Valentine's Day he returned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland armed with an AR-15 rifle.

The shooter reportedly travelled to the school in an Uber and fled by hiding among the panicking crowds.

Then he calmly walked into a McDonald's and a Subway "to celebrate" with fast food.

The teenager surrendered to police in nearby Coral Springs and was taken in for questioning.

He has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and is awaiting trial.

In August, video of a police interview hours after his arrest showed Nikolas sobbing uncontrollably in his brother Zachary's arms after allegedly confessing to the murders.

A 217-page transcript of police interviews revealed Cruz has said he heard voices in his head which he claimed told him to buy guns and "burn, kill, destroy".
