A RISING trend for DIY poo transplants risks people’s health, experts say.
The NHS safely uses the method, putting purified waste from a healthy donor into a recipient with bug C.diff.
But quacks wrongly claim it cures autism, irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s.
This has fuelled interest in the practice, with 4,260 videos on the subject of “fecal transplant” now on YouTube - including “how to” guides.
California’s Prof Rob Knight says using poo that has not been screened by health officials is dangerous.
Professor Knight warned patients risked Aids, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, obesity, anxiety and insomnia.
He added: “It is one of these things where public enthusiasm is dramatically in advance of the evidence.
“The C.diff evidence is good.
“For others, research is needed. A lot of folks will try anything, although there’s not much data to say it’ll work.”
