American man teams up with Indian Facebook friend to create an ‘Earth Sandwich’

Mastermind of the operation, Lee St John, says he's planning to meet his Indian counterpart so they can grab a real sandwich together

A PAIR of ingenious Facebook friends from opposite sides of the world have used wit and two slices of bread to turn planet Earth into a sandwich.

Lee St John from Minnesota, in the US, and Subash Luitel from Delhi, India, teamed up to make the ultimate culinary creation.

Mastermind of the operation Lee, a 34-year-old theatre worker, sparked an online conversation with savvy Subash after reaching out to friends on social media about his plans.

The pair discussed logistics on Facebook messenger before taking pictures of themselves posing with a slice of bread on the floor outside their homes, effectively sandwiching the Earth in between.

Lee posted on social media: "Four hours ago, I had a dream. That dream was to make a sandwich out of the entire Earth. Tonight, my dream comes true."

Neither of them knew the stunt would become an instant internet sensation. According to Lee, the Earth Sandwich has more than 1 million shares across social media.

Lee told The Sun Online: "I was just sitting around one night and was kind of in awe of the power available to me simply through social media and my cell phone.

"I decided that I would use it to do something that was fun, would've been nearly impossible 50 years ago, and might make some people laugh in the process."

Asked what his favourite sandwich is, he said: "I'm pretty into fitness right now... so i'd probably go with a lettuce wrap."

Speaking to the Associated Press, he said: “I know to some it just seems ridiculous, it is, but it is also incredible that in just a few minutes I was able to meet a new person on the other side of the world, coordinate with them and actually pull something like that off.”

The Minnesota man says he has since become friends with Subash and is working to help him achieve his dream of travelling to the US.

He said: “I’ve met a lot of new people from India and all over the world because of this post, so the same technology is also bringing people together and making friendships happen.

“Make sandwiches, not war.”

When he initially proposed the idea to Subash, Lee said: "I'm in America, you're in India. If we both simultaneously put a piece of bread on the ground. Boom! Earth sandwich."

Lee hopes to team up with Tesla and SpaceX billionaire Elon Musk for his next project. “I don’t want to give too much away, but it involves a collaborative effort with Elon Musk,” he said.

“Starts with Mars, ends with sandwich.”

Lee is also trying to use the publicity from his Earth Sandwich to promote local charities in his area, including .
