We will end the £1.4bn energy price rip off this year to help you make ends meet
I gave the Big Six a chance to cut unfair bills - but they didn't, so we're taking action that should be in place to cut your bills next winter
THE economy is growing and employment is at near-record levels but I know that, for many, it can still be a struggle to pay the rent and bills and do the weekly shop.
Balancing the household budget is tough enough without energy companies charging rip-off prices for the gas and electricity we all need.
Yet, right now, millions of loyal customers — particularly older people and those on low incomes — are stuck on poor-value standard variable tariffs, leaving them with bills that are much higher than they need to be.
This is wrong, and The Sun deserves great credit for its campaign to get this changed.
This overcharging costs consumers with the Big Six energy suppliers £1.4billion a year.
This is not fair for hard-pressed, hard-working Sun readers who are just about managing to get by.
WINDFALL TO THE PEOPLE Millions of Brits in line for £100 as Theresa May delivers on energy price cap promise
Last year I told suppliers that if they didn’t cut unfair bills I would act to make them.
They haven’t, so on Monday the Government is introducing legislation that will make energy companies change their ways.
I have been clear the new cap should be in place for next winter, helping protect the 11million bill-payers being charged hundreds more for loyally sticking with their supplier.
We’re also committed to bringing down the cost of energy further by increasing competition, making it quicker and easier to change supplier when you find a deal that’s right for you, and rolling out digital smart meters that let you see exactly how much you’re spending in real time.
And capping your energy bill is just one of the ways we are trying to make life a little easier this year.
We’ve cut income tax, and later this year we’re once again raising the threshold at which you pay it.

In April, the National Living Wage will go up by 4.4 per cent — well above inflation.
And we’re freezing fuel duty again this year, saving the average motorist £160.
This Government is on your side and, whether it’s energy bills or income tax, we won’t stop taking action to cut your costs, boost your wages and make sure you keep more of your money in your pocket.
