Putin announces ‘competition’ to name his new underwater nuclear drone… and the suggestions are bizarre

The Russian President apparently took a lead from Britain who famously let the public compete to name an Arctic exploration ship

VLADIMIR Putin announced an online competition to name Russia's new underwater nuclear drone - and Twitter was quick to suggest Nukey McDroneface.

The president apparently did not learn the lesson Brits learned after the public voted to name an Arctic exploration vessel Boaty McBoatface.

Other suggestions that flooded in after his state of the nation address included Droney McDroneyface and Droney McNukeface.

The Telegraph's Alec Luhn tweeted: "Putin has just announced a web contest to name Russia's new underwater nuclear drone weapon."

Putin's military dubbed the shadowy vessels autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) when they were revealed in January.

And they are able to deploy missiles with a power of 100-megatons - more than 6,500 times the power of the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.

The Pentagon study, obtained by the Huffington Post, went on the warn that Russia was quickly giving Russia an edge over the US in terms of nuclear capabilities.

An extract from the report read: "In addition to modernising ‘legacy’ Soviet nuclear systems, Russia is developing and deploying new nuclear warheads and launchers.

"These efforts include multiple upgrades for every leg of the Russian nuclear triad of strategic bombers, sea-based missiles and land-based missiles.

"Russia is also developing at least two new intercontinental range systems, a hypersonic glide vehicle and a new intercontinental, nuclear-armed undersea autonomous torpedo."
