What SAS training has Meghan Markle had, do all royal family members have it and what is involved?
MEGHAN Markle has undergone intense security training in preparation for life as a future royal as the wife of Prince Harry.
The course is reportedly aimed at preparing Meghan, 36, for any possible emergency, including being kidnapped.
What does the SAS course consist of?
As part of that preparation she has had to endure the rigours of a series of exercises with the Special Air Service (SAS).
The training is believed to include how to react in dangerous situations such as a terrorist attack and a mock kidnapping by “hostage takers” using live ammunition.
Meghan is also likely to have been taught how to form a relationship with her kidnappers.
Where does the training take place?
Training is at the elite unit’s base in Hereford and lasts for two days.
The exercises are said to be designed “to frighten the life out of anyone,” according to one officer.
Former Army intelligence officer Gerald Moor said the kind of training Meghan will have undergone is “the toughest, provided by the Army’s finest … who have done everything imaginable during service in Iraq, Afghanistan and Northern Ireland”.
Which royals get the training?
All senior members of the royal family, apart from the Queen, are given the training.
It is believed Harry’s mum, Diana, undertook a similar course in 1983.
In the Duchess of Cambridge’s case, it took place after her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
What other protection does Meghan get?
The US actress already gets 24-hour protection with a team made up from the Met Police’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command.
In February 2018, Meghan was targeted by a possible “anthrax terror threat”, with an envelope addressed to her that was found to contain a white powder when it was intercepted by Kensington Palace.
Meghan and Prince Harry are due to wed on May 19 2018 at St George’s Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
