Conjunctivitis is an eye condition caused by infection or allergies.

The condition usually gets better in a couple of weeks without treatment.

There are a few things you can do at home to ease the symptoms.

Use clean cotton wool, one piece for each eye, to gently wipe your lashes clean using warm water.

Holding a cold flannel to your eye for a few minutes will help ease any burning sensation.

If you have conjunctivitis you need to throw out any eyeliners or mascaras that may have come into contact with your eyes, as these are breeding grounds for the germs.

You should also avoid wearing contact lenses, sharing towel and pillows and you shouldn't rub your eye.

In most cases you don't need to see a GP, but if you develop sensitivity to light, pain in your eyes or changes in your vision you should see a doctor immediately.

In this woman's case, the conjunctivitis had become quite severe.

In cases this severe it is always a good idea to see a GP.
