Blueberry muffins found to have almost as much sugar as a can of Coke
Healthy-sounding blueberry muffins from coffee chains and supermarkets have as much as ten teaspoons of sugar
“HEALTHY” blueberry muffins can have almost as much sugar as a can of Coke, research found.
There is huge variation in sugar, portion size - and a general lack of information - in blueberry muffins sold at food outlets in the UK’s busiest train stations and supermarkets.
McDonald’s had 32g, equivalent to eight teaspoons, while Pret A Manger had 30.5g.
Worst was Costa’s with 40g of sugar, the same as ten teaspoons. McDonalds Blueberry Muffin and Pret A Manger Double Berry Muffin both had eight.
Three in five studied had at least six teaspoons — over the recommended allowance of under-11s.
Caroline Cerny from Obesity Health Alliance said: “We may think they are healthy yet the figures suggest otherwise.”
“Some of the muffins on sale have twice as much sugar as others. This shows that it is possible for industry to significantly reduce sugar even in their most sugary products to help us all make healthier choices.”
Parents should think twice if buying for kids, warned Action on Sugar.
