COPS searching for Corrie McKeague may have been focusing on the wrong site, it emerged today.
Police admitted they couldn't rule out the possibility the missing RAF gunner's body was at another tip.
The revelation came as Suffolk Police ended their missing persons probe, and handed the case on to cold case detectives.
It come as his dad said his son may have killed himself, and that he knew his girlfriend was pregnant before he disappeared.
Martin said knowledge of the pregnancy would have had a "profound effect" on the then 23-year-old.
Corrie's girlfriend April Oliver has previously said she found out she was going to have a baby two weeks after her boyfriend went missing.
His dad : "I just can’t help thinking this would have weighed on him heavily and he may have actually chosen to get in that bin that night knowing what would happen.
“It’s as probable as anything else and it makes it no less heartbreaking.”
Today Suffolk Police confirmed as "there are no realistic lines of enquiry left to pursue" the case will remain open but move to the major investigations cold case team.
Detective Superintendent Katie Elliott said: “It is extremely disappointing that we have not been able to find Corrie. I can only imagine the strain Corrie’s family have been under over the past 18 months and I thank them for their patience and understanding.
“Whilst the investigation has drawn to a natural conclusion we will continue to work with the family to provide answers to their questions and help them understand what may have happened."
Corrie was last seen walking through Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk in September 2016.
He had been on a night out with friends when he vanished.
CCTV footage showing him eating takeaway food at around 1.20am. At 3.24am he was spotted taking a nap in a nearby doorway before he leaves the view of the camera - this is the last confirmed sighting of Corrie.
Police conducted two searches of a landfill site at Milton near Cambridge last year, with the first search lasting 20 weeks and the second, lasting seven weeks, concluding in December.
It was thought he may have got into a bin and was taken away by a bin lorry, but no trace of him was found at the landfill site.
Police said they were "confident" of finding Corrie's body at the site and his mum said it was "just a matter of time".
However, after a mammoth 20-week investigation, cops finally stopped searching the rubbish for clues on July 21 – sparking emotional scenes as Corrie's dad blockaded the tip's entrance.
