Moment man is SWALLOWED by an escalator after giant hole appears during rush hour in Turkey

SHOCKING footage shows the horrifying moment a man plunged into an escalator - after it gave way beneath his feet.

The terrifying incident was captured on CCTV which shows the man stepping onto the escalator only for it to collapse.

The clip shows a stream of people walking down the escalator, which was out of action for repairs, at Ayazaga Metro station in Istanbul, Turkey.

But it suddenly began moving causing a line of people to simultaneously fall down the metal stairs, with some trying to grip on to the handrail.

As the man, named by local media as Mehmet Ali Erik, steps onto the stairs, they suddenly disappear beneath him and he disappears.

A split second earlier he can been seen hanging on to the railing before losing grip and vanishing into the gaping hole, before the metal stairs close over him.

Mr Erik was reportedly trapped beneath the escalator for an hour before being rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality had reportedly put up a warning sign near the broken escalator but it failed to stop people using it.

In 2015 a mother was killed when she fell into an escalator at a shopping mall in China, after she heroically threw her toddler to safety.
