Eddie Izzard replaces Holocaust row discipline chief on Labour’s ruling council

COMEDIAN Eddie Izzard is to replace Christine Shawcroft on the Labour party’s ruling NEC.

Ms Shawcroft announced she was standing down from the position on Saturday night, in a bid to take the heat off under-fire party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

She stepped down as Labour’s disciplinary chief on Wednesday after opposing the suspension of Alan Bull, a councillor who posted a fake news article branding the Holocaust a “hoax”.

But she kept her place on the dispute panel of the ruling National Executive Committee after aides said Mr Corbyn was powerless to boot her off.

Last night she resigned, declaring: “It is clear that my continued membership of the NEC has become a distraction for the party.

“I reaffirm my complete opposition to anti-Semitism and my abhorrence of Holocaust denial, and support all measures to tackle this within the party.”
