PARKS and city centres across Europe need to be fortified to stop terror attacks, Brussels has warned.

Suggested measures include installing X-ray machines and concrete barriers.

More frequent use of “explosives detection dogs” is also being explored.

Eurocrats said public squares, museums and football grounds, should have panic shelters, walk-through metal detectors and anti-drone systems.

The proposals were presented by the EU Commission to mayors of major EU cities in Brussels.

They were drawn up in response to deadly terror attacks in Manchester, London, Paris, Barcelona, Nice and Stockholm. Atrocities killed 61 people in Europe last year.

The single largest loss came when 22 died in the Manchester arena bombing.

Eurocrats have pledged £105million over the next two years to help boost security measures, on top of £173million already spent on related research projects.

Prime Minister Theresa May says the security of the UK and the EU are a 'common interest' and that both sides should 'retain cooperation'

Measures suggested also include “access control zones” for public buildings with enhanced airport-style security and “perimeter protection” to stop cars packed with explosives getting too close.

The Commission said: “Member States are primarily responsible for the protection of public spaces, but the EU can and should do more to support these efforts.”
