Jogger, 70, killed in freak beach car crash as nine die in Bank Holiday roads chaos
Easter carnage on Britain's roads has left at least nine people dead - including five on Bank Holiday Monday alone
AT least nine people have been killed this Bank Holiday weekend amid Easter carnage on Britain's roads.
Five people died this morning alone including a 70-year-old man who was run over in a suspected freak accident on a Dorset beach.
Two people were killed early this morning in a horror crash involving a car travelling the wrong way down the M62 in West Yorks.
The OAP jogger was hit by an apparent out-of-control car as he ran near a seafront promenade in Swanage at around 8:40am.
A witness said: "The driver was trying to park the car and hit the accelerator which caused it to go over the prom.
"The jogger was on the beach and was in the wrong place and the wrong time."
His dog was also killed in the collision involving a Vauxhall Zafira people carrier being driven by a local woman in her 60s.
The car is believed to have rolled off the 20ft-wide promenade and fell 4ft over the sea wall.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Emergency services this afternoon worked to winch the car off the beach as the tide came in around them.
Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward and the Dorset coroner was notified.
Meanwhile cops arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving after the two-car smash on the M62 near Bradford in the early hours of Easter Monday.
West Yorkshire Police said the two men killed in the collision were aged 34 and 37.
They arrested a 22-year-old who failed a roadside breath test. He was today being quizzed by officers.
Elsewhere a driver was killed and his passengers seriously injured after a BMW slid off a motorway and smashed into a tree this morning.
The man in his 20s was crushed to death as the car left the east bound carriageway of the M25 near a service station.
Four others were pulled from the wreckage - with two seriously injured - and taken to hospital by air ambulance.
The area between junctions 5 and 6 was closed as the injured were treated and the car was recovered.
Road traffic investigators were also dispatched to find the cause of the crash while Surrey Police appealed for witnesses.
And a man was killed in a lorry crash on the M5 motorway near Birmingham early on Bank Holiday Monday.
Police blocked off the scene of what they described as a "serious collision" on the southbound lanes between junctions 2 and 3.
The truck collided with a barrier and then came to a stop just before 5:15am this morning, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said.
The victim, a 61-year-old man, was rushed to hospital with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead.
Highways England said severe delays were expected to last at least eight hours.
Today police named a teenager killed on his moped in the early hours of Easter Sunday.
Keiran Edgar, 18, died in a single-vehicle crash in Billigham, Co Durham at around 5:30am yesterday.
Cleveland Police appealed for witnesses or anyone with CCTV footage to contact them on 101.

The spate of deadly crashes came as millions hit the roads for Easter travelling.
Among the first Bank Holiday tragedies was on Good Friday morning when a motorcyclist was killed in a crash — also on the M62.
Dad-of-three Karl Chester, 36, died following a collision with a blue Nissan Qashqai near Scammonden Reservoir, West Yorks.
His wife Karen, who runs a bar in their hometown Preston, said in a heartbreaking tribute: “He was absolutely loved by many.
"He has only left our sight, he will always ride strong in our hearts.”

On Easter Sunday came the road deaths of 21-year-old Kavana Taylor from Rochdale, Gtr Manchester and a man in his 20s in Essex.
Kavana died when the BMW 1 Series he was driving crashed into a Volkswagen Polo in Rochdale at 1.30am.
Flowers were laid at the crash site yesterday afternoon where friends and family - including mum Claire, 39, and dad Ian, 55 - gathered to pay tribute.
Ian told the : "He will be sadly missed by a lot of people. He was just a lovely lad, very well-mannered."
The unnamed man in Essex was killed when he was hit by a car while lying in the road near Halstead.
Police appealed for witnesses of the "tragic incident" which took place at about 2:30am on Sunday.
Separately, a lorry smashed across the central reservation and flipped onto its side on the M25 in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday.
No one was seriously hurt in the crash between junctions 24 and 25 — which caused massive delays.
