Hospitals purge 1.1 million chocolate bars in NHS bid to cut calories

HOSPITAL shops sold 1.1million fewer chocolate bars last year as new NHS rules slashed 632million calories from the diets of staff, patients and visitors.

Retailer WHSmith axed promotions in its NHS stores and removed a further 275,000 larger bars.

They also joined M&S and the Royal Voluntary Service in purging unhealthy sandwiches from hospital meal deals.

Health chiefs say these measures contributed to a total saving of at least 632million calories, or 80 tons of flab.

But NHS England said 80 NHS trusts out of 232 had not signed up to a separate sugary drinks reduction scheme.
