DONALD Trump has admitted he’s been “too busy” to get a birthday present for his wife, who turned 48 today.

When asked on live television what he’d bought for Melania, the president laughed and said: “Well, I’d better not get into that because I may get in trouble. Maybe I didn’t get her so much.”

But Trump was quick to point out that he had managed to find time, within his hectic schedule, to pick up a card and splash out on some flowers for the First Lady.

During the telephone interview on Fox & Friends, he said: “I got her (Melania) a beautiful card.

“I'm very busy to be running out looking for presents.

“I got her a beautiful card, beautiful flowers.”

He also congratulated his wife for putting on a lovely spread to honour France.

Trump told presenters: “She did a fantastic job with France.

“I tell you what, the people of France are just, were spellbound by what happened, with their great president who just left, Emmanuel.

“And he is a wonderful guy.”

The state dinner on Tuesday night was small and intimate, held in the state dining room under candlelight.

Guests were greeted by touches of gold  - from wine glasses to chairs –arranged around green and white flowers.

At each of the place settings there was a menu, with the White House seal and the fleur-de-lis, which were also in gold.

Just outside the state dining room, the First Lady went with a different theme, using some 1,200 cherry blossoms in giant black vases to greet the 120-some guests as they came in.

The meal included goat cheese gateau, tomato jam, buttermilk biscuit crumbles, young variegated lettuces, along with a rack of spring lamb, burnt cipollini soubise and Carolina gold rice Jambalaya, with a nectarine tart and crème fraîche ice cream for dessert.
