HARRY Potter author JK Rowling has apologised for killing off Dobby the House Elf on the anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts in the book series.

The author took to social media to pay tribute to the popular character, who lost his life in the final book.

The author apologises to loyal fans of the wizarding world every year on May 2 - the anniversary of the climactic battle from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

She wrote: "It's that anniversary again. This year, I apologise for killing someone who didn't die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who'd win it. I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf."

Fans of the books and movies bombarded Rowling's Twitter notifications with tributes of their own for the character.

One replied: "At first I didn't like Dobby, but I wish I could be more like Dobby, his death in book & on film always makes me cry".

Another said: "This is the only death I cried over when reading it, I’ve never read something so sad".

One fan commented: "I’m finding it really hard to forgive you for Dobby and Hedwig. I still have to skip those parts and pretend they made it. Woman, 37 😂".

Another agreed, saying: "Me too, man 46".

In previous years, Rowling has also apologised for the deaths of beloved characters Severus Snape and Fred Weasley.
