POLICE are investigating after a man was caught on video dragging his pet puppy behind his motorbike along a street - so it would "learn how to get home", it was reported today.

The shocking footage shows the helpless dog lying on its side as it is pulled at speed along gravel by a rope tied to the back of the bike.

The video was taken by stunned occupants of a minibus driving along the same Route 81 near Ibarreta, northern Argentina.

As the vehicle draws close to the motorbike, a passenger shouts out that the dog is being suffocated to death.

The motorcyclist, a local man reportedçy known by his nickname Cancino, slows down and tells him the punishment is "so he learns to return home".

The video has caused an outcry in the country after the video was posted onto social media sites yesterday.

Marcelo Escobar, who says the footage was taken by a friend, wrote on his Facebook page: "I hope that someone sees this here and is able to do something so that what this son of a bitch did never happens again.

"Minutes ago a friend in Ibarreta recorded this video where this old guy with the nickname 'Cancino' was driving along the side of the highway with this live puppy tied to his motorbike and being ripped up.

"He clearly says camera that is 'so he learns to return home'.

The sick f*** does something like this with the animal. Enough of cruelty to animals.

"I hope that the next time I'm in Ibarreto I don't come across this piece of crap because I will know you you are and I will beat you up, you child of a thousand whores!! Share."

Local media reported that the incident has been reported to police, who have started an investigation, after incensed locals gathered outside the town's police station.

Speaking yesterday on local radio station Radio Formosa, journalist Gabriel Oliveira said: "The video started circulating a few hours ago and the whole town is very angry and he will receive social condemnation.

"This man is from a traditional Ibarreta family and lives alone.

"At first the police didn't want to receive the complaint, because several neighbors gathered in front of the police station, so the complaint has already been made.

"Several neighbours who saw the situation began to follow him and try to stop him."
