Former English football legend Joe Mercer’s family are selling off his medals so his great-grandchildren can go to university

FOOTIE legend Joe Mercer’s medals and England caps are being sold so his great grandchildren can go to university.

The gongs, which include three league title medals and an FA Cup winners’ medal from his time as an Everton and Arsenal player, could fetch £115,000.

Also up for auction is his title-winning medal as Manchester City manager in 1968.

Mercer’s granddaughter Sue Lea, 51, from Widnes in Cheshire, said the decision had given her sleepless nights.

But a friend of her grandad had told her he would have approved to help Maddy, 16, Chloe, 14, and Harry, nine, fulfil their dreams.

Mercer, who died in 1990 at 76, played five times for England and was boss for seven games in 1974.
The sale is at Graham Budd Auctions in central London on May 21.
