South London stabbing – man in his 20s knifed to death amid knife crime epidemic in the capital

A MAN in his 20s has been stabbed to death in South London today amid a knife crime epidemic in the capital.

The victim was found with stab wounds in the Mitcham area in the early hours of this morning, cops said.

Officers were called to the scene at 3.29am.

Medics desperately battled to save him but he died at the scene.

A 44-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder.

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are probing the killing.

The killing is understood to be the 69th murder in London this year and the 37th fatal stabbing in the capital in 2018.

Last month it emerged knife attacks in the city soared by more than a fifth in the past year as knife crime in London runs out of control.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Police are investigating after a man was fatally stabbed in Mitcham.

"Police were called at 3.29am to Upper Green East, junction with Montrose Gardens, following reports of a stabbing. Officers attended with paramedics.

"A man thought to be in his 20s was discovered suffering from multiple stab wounds.

"Despite the efforts of medical professionals he was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to trace his next of kin. We await formal identification. A crime scene is in place.

"A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

"He has been taken to a south London police station."
