Traders, shoppers and tourists gathered in Borough Market today to pay their respects to the eight people who were killed in the terror attack
BOROUGH Market traders today took part in a minute’s silence to remember those killed in the London Bridge terror attack ahead of the one-year anniversary tomorrow.
A large crowd gathered in the popular market to pay their respects to the eight people who lost their lives when terrorists drove a van into pedestrians on June 3 last year.
Traders, shoppers and tourists stopped and remembered those caught up in the devastating attack when the market bell rang to signal the end of trading at 5pm.
A round of applause broke out afterwards and traders wanted to hold the poignant minute's silence today because the market is closed tomorrow - exactly one year on from the atrocity.
Darren Henaghan, Managing Director at Borough Market, said: “When we were thinking about the best way we could mark the anniversary, one of the key things which came out was that traders and our friends wanted to come together and just have a moment’s reflection and a moment’s silence.
";Of course we are closed tomorrow, on the anniversary, and many of us will be going across to the cathedral.
“But we thought it was important just to come together in a quiet way so we can just pay our respects.”
Eight people were killed and 48 injured when the three attackers – who were wearing fake explosive vests – drove a van across London Bridge.
They then jumped out of the vehicle and began stabbing people around the market in a lethal eight-minute rampage.
Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, were eventually shot dead by police.
The victims of the attack were Christine Archibald, 30, Xavier Thomas, 45, Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sara Zelenak, 21, Kirsty Boden, 28, Sebastien Belanger, 36, James McMullan, 32, and Ignacio Echeverria, 39.
A minute’s silence is being held tomorrow at 4.30pm across all UK government buildings.
Other communities will be paying their respects at different times throughout the day on the official anniversary.
A spokesperson for Borough Market said the Sunday itself would be "a day of sadness, remembrance and contemplation - but also a day that draws on the resolve and unity of our community, and of people from all over the world".
Southwark Council is also holding a memorial procession on June 3, which will run from Southwark Cathedral to Southwark Needle.
