Brexiteers’ fury as leaked Doomsday reports claim Britain would run out of food in ‘no deal’ scenario
Scaremongering documents say that the port of Dover would collapse on day one if we crashed out of the EU without an agreement
BREXITEERS have furiously hit back at leaked reports which claim Britain would run out of food within days if the UK failed to get a deal with the EU.
Scaremongering documents say that the port of Dover would collapse on day one if we crashed out without an agreement with the bloc.
Medicine, food and fuel could be at risk within just a few weeks if we cut ties totally,
The plans are drawn up by civil servants for David Davis and could see officials have to use the RAF to get supplies across the country.
One source told the paper: "The supermarkets in Cornwall and Scotland will run out of food within a couple of days, and hospitals will run out of medicines within two weeks."
But fuming Brexiteers slammed the reports, and said it was highly unlikely these scare stories would ever become true.
Jacob Rees Mogg told The Sun it was "Project Fear on speed".
He said: "Imports would be subject to our own laws.
"We would be free to import food, medicines and fuel as we wished and the EU could only stop this if it were to impose sanctions, which is not a credible thought.
"Except in limited fields, there is no legal mechanism to obstruct trade. The Whitehall document is Project Fear on speed."
And Dover MP Charlie Elphicke added: "Once again we're seeing defeatist doom-mongers saying we can't really leave the EU.
"Yet if we make the investment that's needed and focus our efforts on ensuring we are ready on day one for Brexit at the Dover front line, we can continue to trade seamlessly - just as we do now with the rest of the world."
Former Tory leader Iain Duncan Smith added: "They are frozen in the headlights.
"They should be planning for what happens if there is no deal, not scaring the pants off each other.
"We need people with imagination and courage, not frightened rabbits."
What is a 'no deal' Brexit and will Britain end up crashing out of the EU?
THERESA May and her ministers are confident that Britain will secure a deal with the EU after we leave the bloc.
This is set to include a "bold and ambitious" trade deal too, so we can continue to carry on exchanges of goods similar to how we do it now.
But Brexiteers want the UK to be prepared for no deal - so we can walk away if their hardline demands aren't in our interests.
Ministers say they are preparing too for the scenario, so we've got every base covered in a possible new system.
That would then mean we would revert to World Trade Organisation rules - which many countries around the world use.
And we could need to upgrade both physical infrastructure and staffing at Britain's borders and customs points.
But another option is that customs checks could be axed to try and keep goods moving along - keeping things much the same as they are now.
Even if we didn't strike a deal, we would continue to work closely with the bloc in security and other Europe-wide issues.
Today Home Secretary Sajid Javid shrugged off the claims too, saying: "I don't think any of the [scenarios] would come to pass.
"I don't recognise any bit of that... I am deeply involved in no deal preparations," he told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.
The paper said that the scenarios were so extreme only a handful of people have ever seen them - and the details were locked in a safe.
But they were said to have been leaked by officials who think that some Brexiteers are being too optimistic about walking away with no deal at all.

However, if Europe decided to slap tariffs on Britain or disrupt trade in any way, it would have a knock on effect for countries in the bloc too.
A spokesperson for the Brexit Department said it was "completely false" that the worst case scenario would ever come true.
They said: "A significant amount of work and decision-making has gone into our no-deal plans, especially where it relates to ports, and we know that none of this would come to pass."
