What did Donald Trump’s handshake with Kim Jong-un mean? The President’s greeting explained
KIM Jong-un shared a historic handshake with Donald Trump before signing an important document.
But what does the handshake exactly mean, and what will happen next? Here's what we know so far.
What is the North Korea–United States summit?
Kim Jong-un became the first sitting North Korean leader to meet the serving US President on June 12, 2018.
The tête-à-tête, called the North Korea-United States summit or Singapore summit, happened at Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island.
The meeting was postponed by Donald Trump on May 24, but it was re-scheduled after the Korean leader sent the US President a letter.
The summit was then planned for June 12.
The talks were scheduled to secure a nuclear deal.
What did Donald Trump's handshake with Kim Jong-un mean?
The handshake between the two leaders was a defining moment in history.
They were photographed standing face to face with Trump gripping Jong-un's arm ahead of their meeting.
Expert Darren Stanton said of the shake: "Upon meeting, the two men shake hands.
"Trump gripped his hand, placing another hand on his upper arm, which is a power gesture used to denote he is the stronger man."
The handshake came after a war of words between the two leaders, with Donald Trump referring to his counterpart as "rocket man" in November, 2017.
It is hoped it symbolises the end of hostilities between the two nations.
It also follows awkward handshakes Trump has shared with other leaders.
French President Emmanuel Macron left a thumb print on Trump's hand after locking paws in Canada.
Trump himself was forceful with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in November last year with a handshake.
In fact, the politician's bizarre handshakes have since been dubbed the Trump Pump by puzzled social media users.
But the granddad was accused of snubbing German leader Angela Merkel by not shaking her hand in April last year.
What happened after the handshake?
Trump and Jong-un had a private meeting which lasted 41 minutes.
Afterwards Trump declared the denuclearisation process of North Korea will start "very, very quickly".
"The world will see a major change," Kim said.
Speaking of the meeting, Donald Trump said it had gone "better than anyone could have expected".
The leaders faced the world's press after their discussions.
The North Korean tyrant said: "Many people in the world will think of this as a form of fantasy from a science fiction movie.
And Trump said: "Working together we will get it taken care of. We will solve it.
"We're going to take care of a very big and a very dangerous problem for the world."
They then signed a "comprehensive agreement" which will document changes to the way North Korea handles nuclear weapons.
Of course, the politicians also enjoyed a lavish lunch in the five-star hotel.
What did Kim and Donald enjoy for lunch?
The world leaders tucked into prawn cocktails, beef ribs and Häagen-Dazs ice cream for their working lunch.
The traditional prawn cockatil was served with avocado salad, a green mango kerabu with honey lime dressing and fresh octopus or Korean stuffed cucumber, known as Oiseon.
They were offered beef short rib confit, served with potato dauphinois and steamed broccoli and red wine sauce on the side for the main course.
Alternatives included a braised cod dish.
Ice cream was one of three options for dessert.

What happens next?
The US hopes the meeting will be the first step to improve relations with North Korea and convince Kim to ditch nukes.
Trump has expressed he intends to meet Kim again in the future.
And, through an interpreter, Kim said: "The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America, and thanks to your sincere efforts ... we were able to complete the preparations for the historic summit."
Speaking at a press conference after the signing, Donald Trump said the Korean war "will soon end" and the denuclearisation process will start imminently.
