Mass shootings in America 2018 – how many were there in 2018?

THERE were 340 mass shootings in the US in 2018, according to researchers.

Here we look at America's bloody toll of violence from last year.

How many mass shootings were there in the US in 2018?

recorded a total of 56,953 gun violence incidents in 2018, leading to 14,641 deaths and 28,161 injuries.

There is no widely accepted definition of a mass shooting.

Of these they say 340 were mass shootings.

The not-for-profit group defines a mass shooting as any in which four or more people are shot, including those who are injured but survive, and not including the shooter.

By this measure it records 154 mass shootings in the USA in the first 178 days of 2018.

The worst in terms of casualties was the Valentine's Day school massacre in Marjory Stoneman Douglas School in Parkland, Florida, in which 17 died and another 17 were hurt.

A 2013 report from the Congressional Research Service described mass shootings as those in which gunmen "select victims somewhat indiscriminately" and kill four or more people in the same incident.

That measure would exclude gang shootings and domestic incidents in which a gunman kills several family members.

What are the worst mass shootings in America in 2018?

These are just some of the gun attacks so far in 2018:

January 12: Children aged five and eight shot dead, allegedly by their step-brother, who is also said to have wounded their mum before carjacking a passing vehicle, killing the driver and wounding the passenger, in Nashville, Tennessee.
January 23: Schoolgirl Bailey Holt and classmate Preston Cope, both 15, shot dead and 14 wounded by a teenage shooter at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky.
January 28: Three mass shootings on the same day leave 11 dead. Two were killed and three wounded by an assailant who opened fire outside a bar in Indianapolis, Indiana. Four men were shot dead in a house in Reading, Pennsylvania. And two men and two women were murdered at a car wash in Melcroft, Pennsylvania. The gunman was shot dead by cops.
February 10: Two pensioners were among by a gunman who then shot himself in Painstville, Kentucky.
February 11: Three women were shot dead and three police officers injured during a 14-hour standoff with a barricaded gunman who then shot himself in Detroit, Michigan.
February 14: Ex-pupil shot dead 14 teenagers and three staff at Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida. Another 17 victims were hurt in the eighth deadliest shooting in modern US history.
February 17: One dead and seven wounded in suspected gang shooting in Kansas City, Kansas.
February 26: Gunman George Davis shot dead his ex-girlfriend and her friend and bystanders in a petrol station rampage in Detroit, Michigan. Davis, who had also murdered his cousin nearby, shot himself after a police chase.
March 21: Five including a policeman wounded at a barber shop in San Francisco, California. The gunman was hit by return fire and died later.
April 22: Four people killed and three hurt in Waffle House shooting in Antioch, Tennessee. Naked gun maniac Travis Reinking was tackled by an injured victim as he sprayed diners with an AR-15 rifle.
April 25: Three killed and one wounded at a house in St Louis, Missouri.
May 2: One man killed and four hurt by in Brooklyn, New York.
May 6: Two 18-year-olds shot dead and four friends wounded while travelling in the same car. Shots were fired from another car that pulled alongside in Memphis, Tennessee.
May 13: Five dead and four wounded in two separate mass shootings on the same day in California. A five-year-old girl and her parents were shot dead at a Mother's Day gathering in Stockton. In South Los Angeles, two men were killed and two teens hurt in a drive-by attack.
May 16: Justin Painter killed his three children, wounded his ex-wife and murdered her new boyfriend before turning the gun on himself in a domestic bloodbath in Ponder, Texas.
May 18: Eight pupils and two teachers shot dead and 13 people injured in a massacre at Santa Fe High school in Texas. Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, is said to have shouted "surprise" as he burst into a class armed with his dad's shotgun.
May 20: One dead and seven injured in a nightclub shooting in Hazlehurst, Mississippi.
May 31: A mum and two daughters aged 12 and 14 shot dead in Timmonsville, South Carolina. A girl, eight, and her father were also shot but survived. The attacker was not related to the family, according to reports.
June 2: One victim killed and six more wounded in a suspected gang shooting in Omaha, Nebraska.
June 10: Seven people hurt in suspected gang shooting during a child's birthday party in Aurora, Illinois.
June 11: Four children aged one to 11 murdered by a gunman who then shot himself after a day-long stand-off with police in Orlando, Florida. One officer was left in a critical condition.
June 17: A boy of 13 was among 17 injured when three gunmen opened fire at a community festival in Trenton, New Jersey. One gunman was shot dead by cops.
June 18: Two killed and four injured when a party spilled into violence near a university campus in Chicago, Illinois. Victim Erin Casey, 17, was mistaken for dead and covered with a sheet while still breathing, and later died in hospital.
June 24: One killed and six wounded in a birthday party shooting at a Latin dance studio in Sanford, North Carolina.
June 28: Five staff shot dead and an unknown number injured in a massacre at the offices of the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland.
July 1: in what local media report as an apparent triple murder suicide.
July 9: A 41-year-old woman and her three children, a three, four and six-year-old are found shot dead in their home in Delaware. Her husband, a 43-year-old man, is also found dead at the property with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
July 27: Five in an apparent murder-suicide at a nursing home and a nearby residential property in Robstown, Texas.
July 30: Four people, are found dead with gunshot wounds in an apartment in Astoria, New York.
August 12: in Clearlake, California in an apparent murder suicide. The father was found in the driveway of the property with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Another child, a five year old, received a gunshot wound to the chest and recovered in hospital.
August 26: Two gamers are shot dead during a live stream of the Madden NFL Championship '19 in Jacksonville, Florida. The shooter, named David Katz, then turned the gun on himself at the scene.
September 6: , close to Fountain Square. At least two other people were wounded.
October 28: 11 people were killed after a gunman opened fire at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh during the Sabbath prayer.
November 8: 12 people were killed including a police officer, after a gunman started shooting people at Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks, California.
December 28: A mother and her two children, aged 10 and eight, are shot dead by the mum's boyfriend. The grandmother was also shot and killed.
