Mum whose daughter was attacked by serial killing ‘Angel of Death’ nurse describes shock at latest nurse murder probe
THE mum of a toddler left disabled by a nurse dubbed the 'the Angel of Death' has told of her shock at cops probing the deaths of eight babies at a hospital.
Sharon Asher spoke out after her adopted daughter Kayleigh was left with severe learning difficulties by evil Beverley Allitt.
Kayleigh, now 26, almost died when Allitt injected her with air at the Grantham and Kesteven Hospital, Lincs in 1991.
She was resuscitated after being injected with an air bubble that caused her lungs to collapse and triggered two cardiac arrests.
Sharon, 58, revealed her heart "skipped a beat" when she heard that Lucy Letby, 28, had been arrested amid a probe into SEVENTEEN baby deaths at the Countess of Chester hopsital.
She said: "What we need to think of now is what the families of the children who died are going through.
"They will be questioning whether their child could have been okay was it not for going into hospital.
"It will be torture for them. In light of today's health and safety and strict procedures and even stricter entry into nursing, it makes you wonder how something like this could happen.
"An investigation into Beverley Allitt discovered there was a shortage or nurses but what I remember was that a couple of consultants had raised concerns.
"When something untoward is going on there has to be alarm bells. It's how soon these alarm bells are listened to that can really make a difference."
Twisted Allitt was handed 13 life sentences for her attacks - and was slapped with a 30-year minimum term.
Sharon added: "You take a child to hospital and you think they are in the best place.
"This cannot be put in jeopardy. The families of Allitt's victims can never get over what she did.
"Kayley is on anti-depressants to treat anxiety as she fears Allitt will come back to get her.
