Man chiselled free by firefighters after his foot gets stuck in melted Tarmac in Newcastle

The melted Tarmac created a sinkhole from which the man was unable to release his leg

A MAN was left trapped when his foot went through the road after scorching temperatures melted the Tarmac.

The 24-year-old’s left leg was stuck deep in but he reached his phone and called firefighters.

They used a hammer and chisel to free him in the aptly named Newcastle suburb of Heaton.

A brigade spokesman said: “We were called to a back lane where a man was on his way to buy breakfast and went straight through the road.

“The Tarmac had become so soft it melted.”

The heatwave is set to continue into next week with more thunderstorms that yesterday triggered flash floods in Kent.

The Met Office said: “20-30mm of rain is possible, with a chance of lightning and hail.”
