A TEN-year-old boy has been left with gaping wounds on his head and arms after being mauled by a dog.
The terrified lad had to be rushed to hospital after the animal chased him and tore his flesh.
Shocking pictures have shown painful gashes left on the back of his head, as well as another horrifying wound on his arm.
Cops and paramedics swooped in on the scene in West Lothian around 9pm last night where the lad was soaked in blood.
The creature is thought to be an Akita breed or similar.
Medics stemmed the bleeding before rushing the boy to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, where he is receiving treatment.
A police probe was launched into the attack and a woman has since been charged.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police in West Lothian have arrested and charged a 48-year-old woman in connection with a dog attack.
"The incident took place at around 9pm on Monday July 9 when a ten-year-old boy sustained serious injuries."
It is thought that an Akita attack the ten-year-oldThey continued: "Police Scotland has taken possession of a mixed-breed dog and are awaiting a decision by the Procurator Fiscal regarding any further action in relation to the animal.
"The woman has been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 8.54pm hours on Monday 9 July to attend an address in West Lothian.
“We dispatched an ambulance to the scene and one male child was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh.”
