The 82-year-old from Pune, India, said he was constantly in pain because of his unsightly, brown claws.

He told Guinness World Records: "With every heart beat all five fingers, my wrist, elbow and shoulder are hurting a lot.

"At the tip of the nail there's a burning sensation always," said Chillal who has been growing them since he was 16.

He has now decided to donate them to Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in Times Square, the New York Post reported.

Despite his abnormally long nails, Chillal got married, had two kids and worked as a government press photographer.

The nails, however, eventually became a burden for the 88-year-old man, whose left hand is forever handicapped.

In 2015, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping.

"While he may have cut his fingernails, his nails will be forever memorialised."
