Theresa May presiding over ‘cloak and dagger’ plot by ‘establishment elite’ to sink Brexit, ex-minister claims.. as PM demands rebels’ backing

THERESA May is leading a "cloak and dagger" plot to sabotage Brexit, an ex-minister has warned.
Former Brexit minister Steve Baker said the PM has "betrayed" ordinary voters - and warned her current deal risks putting Jeremy Corbyn in Downing Street.
The leading Eurosceptic - who resigned last week in protest at the Chequers deal - told : "I hope that the public's eyes will be opened to what's going on today.
"An establishment elite who never accepted the fundamental right of the public to choose democratically their institutions, are working towards overturning them.
"Large sections of the Government were working on the Chequers plan, and they've just had a coup de grâce at the last minute. I feel pretty sore about that.
"The public will know they have been betrayed."
Baker added that ordinary working people will soon realise "their vote no longer counts for anything".
He attacked the PM for negotiating with the EU "on our knees", blasting it as "pathetic".
And he claimed the "Brexit-wrecking" Chequers deal could end up putting Jeremy Corbyn in Number 10.
High-profile Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg seemed to support the idea of a conspiracy to undermine Brexit.
He told “She always wanted a soft Brexit.
“It would have been more straightforward to admit that no real Brexit was the intention all along rather than trying to gull Brexiteers.
“Perhaps we ought to have realised earlier on that a Remainer would stick with Remain.”

But Theresa May hit back, warning warned rebel MPs to back her plan or risk "ending up with no Brexit at all".
She wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "This is the scale of the opportunity before us and my message to the country this weekend is simple: we need to keep our eyes on the prize. If we don't, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all.
"This is a time to be practical and pragmatic - backing our plan to get Britain out of the European Union on 29 March next year and delivering for the British people."
