The leading Eurosceptic - who resigned last week in protest at the Chequers deal - told : "I hope that the public's eyes will be opened to what's going on today.

"An establishment elite who never accepted the fundamental right of the public to choose democratically their institutions, are working towards overturning them.

"Large sections of the Government were working on the Chequers plan, and they've just had a coup de grâce at the last minute. I feel pretty sore about that.

"The public will know they have been betrayed."

But Theresa May hit back, warning warned rebel MPs to back her plan or risk "ending up with no Brexit at all".

She wrote in the Mail on Sunday: "This is the scale of the opportunity before us and my message to the country this weekend is simple: we need to keep our eyes on the prize. If we don't, we risk ending up with no Brexit at all.

"This is a time to be practical and pragmatic - backing our plan to get Britain out of the European Union on 29 March next year and delivering for the British people."
