Barry George says he still lives ‘looking over his shoulder’ after being acquitted of the murder of Jill Dando
BARRY George has admitted he still lives “looking over his shoulder” despite being acquitted of the murder of Jill Dando.
George, 58, walked free ten years ago after wrongly being found guilty of killing the Crimewatch presenter.
But he claims just weeks after leaving prison he had a gun pressed to the back of his head and was told to “watch your back”.
He said he believes the person responsible for the threat “had a link to the murder” but claims cops just gave him “lip service”.
Speaking with Barry claims he still does “not feel free” and is “looking over his shoulder”.
He said: “I was living in fear…nobody should have to live like that.”
Jill, 37, was shot once in the head outside her home in Fulham, London in April 1999 and died less than two hours later.
Her murder prompted an enormous inquiry and cops concentrated their attention on Mr George, who lived around half a mile from the presenter.
He was put under surveillance and charged with murder on May 28 where he went on trial at the Old Bailey.
Mr George was convicted in July 2001 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
He served eight years in prison but was granted a retrial on appeal, and received a unanimous acquittal by a jury in August 2008.
Doubt was cast on the reliability of gunshot residue evidence and Mr George was refused compensation at the Court of Appeal in 2013.
Jill’s killing remains one of the most notorious unsolved murders in Britain.
