But where is the island, how many people live there, and what’s the island’s famous tipple? Here’s the lowdown.
Where is the Isle of Harris?
The Isle of Harris is the biggest island in the Outer Hebrides, or Western Isles, Scotland, famed for its dramatic landscapes, stunning beaches and its own cloth, Harris Tweed.
Harris is part of the South Lewis, Harris and North Uist National Scenic Area, on of 40 in Scotland defined to identify regions of exceptional scenery.
The isle divides into northern and southern parts, separated by West and East Loch Tarbet.
Tarbet, the main community on the island, can be reached by taking the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Skye to Harris.
The northern part of the island is called Lewis, though both are frequently referred to as is they were separate islands.
And the shared boundary between Harris and Lewis is where the island narrows between Loch Resort on the west and Loch Seaforth on the east.
What is the island’s population?
Despite being the third biggest island in the British Isles, Harris and Lewis has a population of just 20,500.
Around 550 people live in Tarbert.
The island is the ancestral homeland of the Highland Clan MacLeod, while Lewis is also the ancestral home of Clan Morrison.
The Lewis chessmen is a famous collection of 12th-century chess pieces, carved from walrus ivory and discovered in Uig in 1831.
What is Isle of Harris Gin?
In addition to Harris Tweed, the island also has another iconic brand:
Brewed in the Isle of Harris Distillery, the spirit has become the most one of the most popular brands of Scottish gin since it launched in 2015.
In august 2016, it was so sought after that a rationing process was put in place due to a shortage of the drink’s signature bottles.
The gin is infused with hand-dived sugar kelp seaweed, which gives it a distinctive flavour.
