Donald Trump will come on full-blown state visit in spring, US ambassador claims as he insists President’s trip to Britain was a success
After declaring the US President's last four-day flying trip to Britain as a success, Woody Johnson said he could return as early as next spring for a full state visit
DONALD Trump could return to Britain as early as next spring for another visit, the US ambassador has predicted.
Woody Johnson insisted that the President's four-day flying visit to Britain earlier this month was a huge success, and a full state trip could be on the cards next.
He told Channel 4's When Trump Came to Town: Inside the American Embassay: "It's hard to know but, a state visit next spring would be, I think, the next step.
"But he might visit before that, who knows?"
The US President caused controversy before he even set foot in Britain on his trip two weeks ago, by attacking Mrs May's Brexit plan and rounding on other Nato members at a Brussels summit.
And he went on to give an explosive interview to the Sun where he said a trade deal would be off the cards - hours before meetings with Theresa May at Chequers.
He later backtracked on his comments, saying: "Whatever you do is OK with me - just make sure we can trade together."
Meanwhile tens of thousands of people in cities across the UK took to the streets to protest his visit - but there were also crowds who came out to cheer him on.
Mr Johnson said the team had executed the trip with "flying colours".
He said: "I think everybody saw this as a great honour to be around and plan for the president’s first visit.
"The president left accomplishing I think what he wanted to accomplish."
