Lowdham Grange Prison in lockdown as inmates riot and wardens battle to regain control

Lags 'armed with knives' sparked a riot in Serco-run Nottingham jail 'over conditions'

A NOTTINGHAM jail was last night on lockdown after inmates "armed with knives" sparked a riot over conditions.

Wardens battled to regain control of HMP Lowdham Grange for nearly six hours as they tried to quell the violence.

Unrest at the category B prison, run by private firm Serco, began on the F wing of the 888-capacity jail.

The entire facility was put on lockdown as an operation to quash the lag uprising continued late into the night.

One inmate told the that guards were chased away by knife-wielding prisoners.

He said: "They've taken control of F Block. The prison officers were chased off the wing at around 5.40pm, and we've been in lockdown since 6pm."

"They're armed with knives and weapons."

The lag confirmed the riot was sparked because of grievances over conditions in the jail.

A spokesperson for Serco said: "We can confirm that there is an incident of concerted indiscipline at HMP Lowdham Grange involving a handful of prisoners and contained within one wing".

The unrest was brought to an end at around 11:30pm last night.

The spokesman, who said no one was armed and police were not involved, said: "The prison staff took action this evening, there was no resistance and there were no injuries.

"This involved a maximum of six prisoners."
