The injured boy then fell off and panicked witnesses sprinted over to try and help him before they chased the rider while shouting: "Why are you leaving him?"

Abu Kamara, the residents’ chairman of the Crawford estate, said the boy had been stabbed twice in the side.

He said: "He (the rider) shouted ‘help him, help him, he’s been stabbed’ to people standing on the street and rode off.

“I can’t believe it he just left him in the middle of the road. He obviously didn’t want to get involved with police and panicked.”

Police have now arrested a 17-year-old in Kent on suspicion of murder and he remains in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Harding, from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, who is leading the investigation, said: "Earlier today we arrested a 17-year-old male on suspicion of Latwaan's murder and although this is a good start to our investigation, we still want to hear from the driver of the moped as soon as possible.

"This is a tragic incident which has resulted in another young person being fatally stabbed in London and it's important we establish where the victim initially received his injuries.

"If anyone saw the moped make off from the scene or recognises the helmet or moped we equally need to hear from them."

Violent crime in London has continued to spiral, with a 17-year-old girl stabbed to death in a block of flats just down the road from the latest killing.

Katerina Makunova was discovered slumped in a block of flats in Camberwell, South London, in broad daylight on July 12.

There are believed to have been 90 murders in the capital this year as the bloodbath continues.

The grisly figure meant London's homicide rate momentarily overtake that of New York.

Knife crime across the country has also risen by a staggering 21 per cent in the 12 months to September 2017, according to .

The increase comes as violent drug gangs from the capital carry out a 'hostile takeover' of the British countryside by preying on the vulnerable using "cuckooing" tactics.

Stabbings in London are at their highest level in six years, with a 23 per cent rise from the previous year.
