Jeremy Corbyn faces an ambush by 300 regional Labour parties to force him into backing another Brexit vote

JEREMY CORBYN faces an ambush by 300 regional Labour parties to force him into backing a second Brexit Referendum.

A nationwide campaign will be launched next week urging activists to sign a motion to be put to the vote at the Labour Party’s annual conference in Liverpool next month.

A vote in favour at conference would compel the Labour leadership to accept a so-called “People’s Vote”. Sources told The Sun the motion may also demand Labour then campaign “to remain in the EU”.

Some 130 constituency Labour parties (CLPs) are already though to be supporting the move.
But a draft memo seen by The Sun shows campaigners want 300 to sign up to boost the chances of having the motion selected at conference.

Critically the push is backed by union leaders – including TSSA chief Manuel Cortes. Sources claim Momentum co-founder Jon Lansmann is also supporting the idea.

A source told The Sun: “An overwhelming number of Labour members and voters are fed up with Brexit. We believe a substantial number want the party to face up to Brexit extremists.”

Jeremy Corbyn has repeatedly refused to rule out a second Referendum – with aides merely saying it is not current Labour policy.

But Shadow Brexit Secretary Sir Keir Starmer last month said Labour could back a ‘People’s Vote’ if MPs reject Theresa May’s final deal with Brussels.

At the time, he said: “In those circumstances it seems to me the sensible thing is to keep all our options on the table.”

Union powerbroker Len McCluskey – the head of Labour donor Unite – last month said he was “open to the possibility” of a second vote.

Labour opens the floor to motions by party members and activists on the Sunday of its annual conference. A panel of party bigwigs select a shortlist of motions that make it to the vote.

Jeremy Corbyn suffered a major blow to his authority three years ago when unions and the membership rejected a bid for a vote on the renewal of the Trident nuclear deterrent at party conference.

Pound slumps vs dollar

THE Pound slipped to its lowest level against the US dollar in nearly a year as traders worried about the growing possibility of a No-Deal.

Sterling was down more than 0.4 per cent versus the dollar at 1.287 — its weakest point since last August.

The UK currency also plunged 0.5 per cent against the euro, reaching its lowest since October.

But the Pound’s tumble lifted the FTSE 100, as multinational companies listed on the index tend to benefit when foreign currencies are stronger than Sterling.
