‘Fascists’ slam bakery in Cornwall for crimping pasties on top and not on the side
Outraged locals insisted a proper Cornish pasty should only be side-crimped, as stated by EU trademark law
A BAKERY owner in Cornwall has been slammed by outraged locals for crimping her pasties on top instead of along the side.
But Mikaela Parry, 51, hit back by blasting the traditionalists as “fascists”.
Many insist a proper Cornish pasty should only be side-crimped, as stated by EU trademark law.
But Mikaela insists the earliest had the thick crust on top and has even named her new shop Over The Top Cornish Pasties.
Mikaela, of Gunnislake, said: “Cornish pasty fascists certainly come out in force when they find out we crimp on the top.
“My family have made them this way for generations.
I don’t remember pasties ever being crimped on the side in the 1970s and ’80s.
We have old postcards and photos dating back to 1901 which show miners eating pasties with the crimp on top.”
But Facebook user Steve Fitzpatrick wrote: “It’s just not a Cornish Pasty.”

Steve Yelland added: “Looks like a Devon imitation to me!”
It is believed the crusts may have first been designed for tin miners to hold and then throw away to protect the food from dirty fingers.
But old photos show pasties wrapped in bags and eaten from end-to-end.
