In 2016 Southgate, 47, put money in a film production scheme caught up in a £434million tax avoidance dispute.

Its activities were believed to be legal at the time, but are now considered illegal by HMRC.

His involvement with Eclipse 35 may stop him being given a knighthood after England’s World Cup performance, The Sunday Times reported.

Hundreds of stars paid into the firm. It is still in dispute with HMRC.
