THIS is the horrifying moment Brazilian presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in the stomach as he was lifted above the crowd during a rally.
The accused knifeman claims he was ordered by God to carry out the attack on the controversial politician, who is known as ‘Brazil’s Trump’.
Local police in Juiz de Fora told Reuters the attacker, Adélio Bispo de Oliveira, 40, appeared to be mentally disturbed.
Interview footage showed Oliveira telling police he had been ordered by God to carry out the attack which left Bolsonaro with perforations to his liver, lung and intestines.
Bolsonaro has been dubbed "Brazilian Trump" for his propensity to make homophobic, sexist, and racist comments.
Oliveira's Facebook page showed he was a strong supporter of ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is barred from running due to a criminal conviction for corruption.
He was also highly interested in secret societies and the Free Masons.
Operating surgeon Luiz Henrique Borsato said: "His internal wounds were grave and put the patient's life at risk,"
The challenge going forward was preventing infection that could result from the perforation of Bolsonaro's intestines.
Initial reports suggest he will be in hospital for at least a week and facing a two-month recovery - a serious delay with the vote a month away.
Under Brazil's campaign laws, Bolsonaro's small coalition has almost no campaign time on TV and radio, which means he relies on social media and rallies to drum up support.
As such, not being able to go out in the streets could impact his campaign.
Military police arrested Oliveira who had to be rescued after angry crowds tried to lynch him.

Bolsonaro's previous controversial comment include saying a congresswoman was "too ugly" to be raped.
He also told Playboy Magazine he would be “incapable of loving a gay son” and would rather see such a son die in an accident.
Just like the embattled US president, Bolsonaro also supports loosening gun control laws, and has a strong evangelical supporter base, thanks in part due to his hard anti-abortion stance.
He has modelled himself as a strong law and order man, and claims he will be tough on crime, exploiting many who blamed the left for rife corruption.
Bolsonaro is also under investigation for racism after making remarks about Afro-Brazilians.
In the shocking stabbing video Mr Bolsonaro can be seen being held up by supporters and waving to the crowd when he suddenly clutches his abdomen and crumples in pain.
The attacker's hand appears to recoil clutching a large knife.
Brazil's O Globo newspaper reports that his politician victim usually wears a bullet-proof vest, but was on this occasion time unprotected.
