M1 crash kills woman, 62, after Mercedes crashes into her broken-down car
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash on the M1
A WOMAN has been killed after her broken down car was slammed into by a black Mercedes on the M1 overnight.
The 62-year-old woman died when she was hit by the luxury vehicle on the northbound carriageway, with two additional cars involved in the carnage.
A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after the crash in Sheffield at about 9.40pm.
Police said the woman's grey Nissan Qashqai had broken down about one mile north of Woodall Services.
Both the driver and passenger then got out of the car.
South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "About 16 minutes later, it is believed that a black Mercedes E-class was involved in a collision with the stationary Qashqai, which then collided with the passenger of the Qashqai, a 62-year-old woman."
A grey Peugeot 407 and a black Volkswagen Golf were then involved in collisions with the Mercedes and each other.
The woman suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The man who was arrested at the scene this morning remains in police custody.

Officers want to hear from anyone who may have been travelling on the M1 northboundor who may have witnessed the multi-vehicle collision.
