CRASHING THE PARTY

Tony Blair says new centrist party to stop Brexit is IMPOSSIBLE and urges MPs to overthrow Corbyn and May instead

The former PM urged politicians to abandon their plans to set up a third party

TONY Blair today rubbished calls for a new centrist party to take advantage of the gap in British politics.

The ex-PM - seen as a potential leader of a new anti-Brexit movement - said it would probably be “impossible” for a third party to rise to power.

And he called on mainstream Tory and Labour politicians to rise up and overthrow their leaders instead of breaking away.

, Mr Blair savaged both major parties and said they were letting the country down.

He accused the Tories making unrealistic promises about Brexit - claiming a second EU referendum could be the only way to resolve the current divisions.

And he attacked Jeremy Corbyn, claiming the Labour boss has laid out a “welcome mat” for anti-Western communists who would previously have been shut out of the party.

Mr Blair added: “In have poured these outcasts from the political wilderness, suddenly in charge of a potential party of government.

“With them has come their sectarian, shouty, finger jabbing, with a whole sub-culture of conspiracy theories - the left equivalent of the alt-right.”

But he insisted the way out of the impasse isn’t for politicians to set up a new party, because our electoral system is so dominated by the big two parties.

He said: “I am not advocating a new party, organising one, or wanting to vote for one. In the British system such an endeavour may be impossible.

“But the serious figures in both main parties need to demand of their leadership: enough, change course, you do not have indefinite licence to go further towards the extremes or unlimited time to return to reason.”

A number of Labour MPs have discussed leaving the party and setting up a new vehicle to oppose Brexit and promote centre-left ideas.

But every new party which has launched over the past two years has been a flop.
